1. Bose SoundLink Mini

Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker

The Bose Soundlink Mini is the most compact speaker in Bose’s incredible stable of best Bluetooth wireless speakers. This speaker is also one of the highest rated Bluetooth wireless speakers on the market. It is no surprise that this blue tooth speaker is one of Bose’s best performing wireless speaker.

Features of the Soundlink

Sound Quality

Bose is the industry leader in producing high quality sound systems. The SoundLink Mini Bluetooth speaker is no different. It produces a full, well balanced sound from a super compact speaker that can fit in most people’s hand. This speaker produces a dynamic sound and it provides excellent quality bass sounds.

Rechargeable Battery

The Soundlink Mini comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery best Bluetooth speakers that can deliver up to 7 hours of performance. The Soundlink Mini comes with two charging methods. When you are at home, you can use the convenient charging cradle.

If you’re away from home, a wall charger that plugs into the charging cradle can also plug into the speaker itself. When the battery has been totally discharged, it only takes up to three to recharge to 100%.

Verdit – 5 out 5

There are many good Bluetooth wireless speakers online to purchase. However, we give the Bose Soundlink Mini our highest rating. This speaker is just the best. It costs more than its competitors in the Bluetooth wireless speaker market, but this speaker produces the best sound quality hands down. Life is short, spend the extra money and buy a blue tooth wireless speaker that you will enjoy listening to your favorite tunes. This is my choice for the best backpacking speaker.

2. Jawbone Big Jambox

Jawbone has released a long line of wearable and portable sound systems stretching back over a decade, but it wasn’t until their release of the Big Jambox that going bigger seemed to be the right choice. Not only is the Big Jambox best Bluetooth speakers the largest product in their lineup of audio devices, it also boasts some of the highest specs that are currently available.

A Look at Jawbone

Jawbone began as a technology company devoted to small but powerful audio devices, and their original lineup was a number wearable listening devices. As time went on, they expanded their product line to include the Jawbone series of speakers which were meant to produce amazing sound and clarity in a device that could still be moved around with ease.

With a number of industry awards under their belt, Jawbone finally decided to release the full-sized Big Jambox.

Main Specs

While one may think that the biggest product in Jawbone’s lineup is going to be completely unwieldy and not the right size to be moved around, it still leaves a relatively small footprint. Overall, it is 1.57 inches in height, 2.24 inches in width, and 5.95 inches in length.

This means that it is just over double the size of the original Jambox, but it is still surprisingly simple to grab for a day in the park or to move from room to room in the house. While it does not come stock with a transportation case, one is available as an aftermarket addition.

Sound Quality

Along with the Bose Soundlink, the Jawbone’s Big Jambox is one of two speakers that we give the highest rating for exceptional sound quality.

Input and Controls

If there is one thing that Jawbone is known for, it is blending aesthetically pleasing cases with exceptionally intuitive and simple controls. Outside of the power button and pairing button, all of the original familiar controls run along the top with the addition of a rewind button and a sleeker pause and play button.

There are also the two inputs ports for the power and the mini-USB connection tucked away just behind the power and pairing buttons. The Big Jambox is rated to have 15 hours of moderate use and upwards of 500 hours of standby energy and will turn off after just a few minutes of failed attempts to connect wirelessly. Unfortunately, Jawbone has still not made it possible to charge devices that are connected to the mini-USB port.

With a relatively powerful Bluetooth connection, users will typically be able to extend the range of their Jambox to about 30 feet. Bluetooth connections are affected by outside factors, however, and this means that connections could extend all the way out to 50 feet.

It connects to all devices that are Bluetooth compatible such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

Design

The Jawbone Jambox is the sleekest, most remarkable Bluetooth speaker that we have reviewed. This speaker is truly a portable Bluetooth speaker coming in at less than a pound. It also didn’t sacrifice sound quality for the smaller design.

The Jawbone Jambox comes in 4 different colors and different textures. The colors are graphite hex, red, white wave and white platinum. The front grille comes with varying geometric patterns depending on the color that you pick.

Standout Features

This is the first product in Jawbone lineup that is touted as a “smart speaker,” a relatively new term in the industry. When paired with Android devices, users will be given a wide list of options for various commands and prompts that are sent directly through the speaker itself.

These features are further extended with the use of the Companion app which will allow for customizing everything from volume control bleeps to incoming calls. Unfortunately, Apple devices are restricted to only the most basic command features.

Final Glimpse

While these basic features and hardware additions will make the Big Jambox more ergonomic and comfortable to use, it is the sound quality that will win most people over. For its size, the volume and quality of sound that the Big Jambox is able to produce is exceptional.

This includes fair quality across all volumes and wavelengths, so everything from a full concerto to an audiobook will be pleasant to listen to.

Whether it is used as a speakerphone during an important business call or as an entertainment center when entertaining guests, Jawbone has once again produced a device that has astounding noise and quality for its size and its price.

3. JBL On Tour iBT

It looks like a UFO, but plays decidedly Earth-like music. The JBL On Tour iBT is JBL’s entry into the wireless Bluetooth speaker market, and while it has its good points it also has some major flaws, depending on your musical taste.

JBL has been building speakers and electronics since 1946, and they’re quite good at it; now owned by Harman International, their products have been used at the Super Bowl, the Grammys and soccer’s World Cup.
With a solid reputation like that, the On Tour iBT should be a serious contender among consumers looking to add a little pop to their music on their iPhone or Android smartphone.
The battery-powered unit will pair with any Bluetooth-enabled device, and can also directly connect to a device with a stereo mini-jack. Weighing in at just over a pound, it has four full-range transducers with computer-optimized DSP equalization and measures about 6 inches in diameter at about 2 inches tall.

The circular body has four speakers facing outward, with volume controls, microphone and answer/end phone call button on one speaker; it also comes with a power supply and output adapter, cord for Apple products, a remote and a tabletop stand.

JBL On Tour iBT – Portable and Easy to Use

The JBL On Tour is designed for people who don’t want to be tethered to their iPod or MP3 player when moving around; for people who like to take their speakers with them without worrying about unplugging things, this is their type of product. The On Tour also can charge Apple devices while plugged into an A/C outlet.

It has its own microphone in the center of the unit, so users can do things such as talk to friends using FaceTime without worrying about where the microphone is; the unit’s 360-degree coverage solves that problem. It works well for conference calls and has a range of about 30 feet from its Bluetooth source, but within 10 feet is an ideal distance. Song vocals by all accounts are clear and free of distortion when played at a reasonable volume. Just in case, the unit also comes with a one-year warranty.

Sound Quality

With the design of the unit, there are 4 speakers placed in a 360-degree circle to provide sound projection capabilities in all directions.

The 4 speakers and 4 frequency drivers work to produce a balanced sound for the middle and high ranges. However, this Bluetooth wireless speaker falls short when dealing with low-frequency bass. JBL seems to have tried to equalize the sound across all frequencies as best as possible, but users who like rich, bass-heavy music are bound to be disappointed because the drivers just aren’t there.

At high volumes, reviewers also noticed some distortion. For most music lovers this may just be an irritant depending on how loud they like their music. However, bass lovers that might want to look at other portable bluetooth speakers that offer a rich bass sound.

Recommendation

The JBL On Tour iBT is available many places at many online stores, but buyers should keep in mind this is more of a tabletop speaker than something to take outside to a party. It’s useful for conference calls and being able to move from room to room, and left at a decent volume will satisfy most people. This isn’t a system for cranking out the bass, as the system just doesn’t have the firepower—but for its price, it works well enough.

4. Ultimate Ears BOOM

Portable wireless speakers are a great way to share your music wherever you go, and the rugged Ultimate Ears BOOM are some of the best wireless Bluetooth speakers that will produce exceptional sound in a stylishly designed package.

Ultimate Ears – Best Wireless Bluetooth Speakers

Ultimate Ears is a company with almost a decade of experience in making audio equipment. Initially, the company produced in-ear monitors for rock musicians. Once they brought their expertise into the consumer market, their sales rapidly increased. Though they continue to make the same in-ear monitors that made them famous, their line of products grew after being acquired by Logitech in 2008. The UE BOOM Bluetooth speaker is the latest result of an ever-evolving product line.

Summary

The Ultimate Ears BOOM wireless Bluetooth speaker is a well-designed device with a sleek look and durable build quality. The audio output, particularly the bass, may not impress some audiophiles, but it is impressive for a wireless speaker, especially considering the small package. What impressed me the most about the speaker was how loud it was.

It was far louder than its rivals, the Grace Digital Ecoxgear Ecoxbt and the Jawbone Jambox. I found the audio to be just as good whether it was lying on its side or sitting upright.

The BOOM feels a little heavy for its size, but that just means it has a lot of technology packed into a small space. It is easy to carry around, and it is small enough to fit in any space. The size is perfect for holding in the hand, and the rubberized surface gives you a comfortable grip. Ultimate Ears claims that the speaker is water resistant. I took the risk and poured a cup of water over it and was happy to see that it continued playing without any distortion.

Features

The team at Ultimate Ears has packed a ton of features into the BOOM. Inside the case are two 1.5″ full-range speakers, two 2″ passive radiators, and four Ohm drivers. It has been engineered to output 360° sound, meaning you have the same listening experience no matter which side of the speakers you stand on.

This is important because the speaker is meant to be held in the hand, hung from backpacks, or hung from tree branches. All that moving around is bound to get it dirty, but the case is stain-resistant and water-resistant. The rubberized finish on the outside is easy to wash or wipe down if it gets dirty or stained with oil from your skin.

The UE BOOM Android and iOS app will show you the battery life and allow you to adjust the volume, bass and treble. You can also pair two speakers to one phone and play them in stereo. The Bluetooth antenna in the speaker has a range of 50 feet. That’s better than some devices, but still not a lot for a speaker intended for people on the move. If you’re having a party in your backyard, one trip into the house will leave your guests in silence.

The top has a loop you can hook a lanyard on or clip to a backpack with a carabineer. Unscrewing the hook reveals a tripod mount. The speaker has no display, and the only buttons are huge + and – symbols for adjusting the volume. Push both, and an electronic voice will tell you the battery level. It charges through a standard micro-USB port, so you charge it with your smartphone wall charger or with your laptop. During full-time play, the battery lasts for about 15 hours. The device comes in white, pink, red, blue and moss.

Pros

  • Exceptionally loud volume
  • Water-resistant and stain-resistant
  • Good dynamic range for its size
  • Long battery life
  • Very portable and durable
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Bass output was disappointing
  • Short Bluetooth antenna range
  • More expensive than its rivals

The Ultimate Ears BOOM is one of the best Bluetooth backpacking speakers on the market and is a well-designed device with a sleek look and durable build quality. The audio output, particularly the bass, may not impress some audiophiles, but it is impressive for a wireless speaker, especially considering the small package.

  • Medium
